10-Year-Old Detained After Playground Stabbing Injures 7-Year-Old in Mountain View

A troubling incident unfolded Wednesday afternoon at an elementary school in Mountain View when a 7-year-old child was injured in a stabbing at a playground during an after-school program.

Police said the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. at Bubb Elementary School, where children were participating in supervised activities. Emergency calls reported that a young child had been stabbed.

Authorities confirmed that the 7-year-old victim sustained three stab wounds to the shoulder area. Officials believe a kitchen knife was used in the attack. The child received immediate medical attention, and the extent of the injuries has not been publicly detailed beyond being described as non-life-threatening.

The suspected attacker, identified as a 10-year-old who does not attend the school, reportedly left the campus before officers arrived. Law enforcement initiated a search and, with assistance from a K-9 unit from the Los Altos Police Department, tracked the child to a nearby residence.

The suspect was located and taken into custody without further incident. Police later transferred custody to mental health professionals from Pacific Clinics, which provides juvenile behavioral health services in the county.

Officials have not released additional details about what led to the altercation. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
