Chicago, Illinois: A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon after police say he attempted an armed robbery in the West Pullman neighborhood on the city’s Far South Side.
The incident occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. in the 11700 block of South Normal Avenue. According to authorities, the teen allegedly approached a 27-year-old man and tried to rob him at gunpoint.
Investigators said the man, who was also armed, pulled out his own firearm during the confrontation and shot the teenager in the chest.
Emergency responders transported the teen to Christ Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Two handguns were recovered from the scene as part of the preliminary investigation.
Police took the 27-year-old man in for questioning. Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including whether the incident qualifies as self-defense.
No additional details have been released as the investigation remains ongoing.
