A man armed with a knife was shot and killed by police Wednesday afternoon at a waterfront park in Weymouth, Massachusetts, authorities confirmed.
Officers were called to Webb Memorial State Park off River Street around 4 p.m. following reports of a person in distress. According to the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office, responding officers encountered a man holding a knife.
Officials said an officer provided immediate medical aid at the scene before the man was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead.
Investigators have not released details about what led up to the shooting or what prompted officers to open fire. No other injuries were reported.
Residents living near the park described a heavy emergency response unfolding within minutes. One neighbor said multiple police cruisers and ambulances arrived quickly, signaling a serious situation.
Aerial footage showed state police investigators working near a building believed to house the park’s public restrooms. Evidence markers were visible on the ground as detectives searched nearby brush.
The park, typically busy with joggers and dog walkers during the late afternoon, was largely cleared as authorities processed the scene.
Officials emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and stated there is no continuing threat to the public.
Weymouth is located along Massachusetts’ South Shore, roughly 10 miles south of Boston.
