A welfare check call ended in tragedy Wednesday when a police pursuit stretching across two Indiana counties concluded in a fatal crash on U.S. 30, Indiana State Police confirmed.
The sequence of events began when ISP troopers responded to a welfare check. Officers located a vehicle believed to be connected to the call in Whitley County — but instead of stopping, the driver fled.
The chase crossed county lines into Allen County, where the vehicle ultimately crashed.
The driver did not survive.
Indiana State Police have not yet released the identity of the person who died, nor an official cause of death. That information is expected to be disclosed at a later time.
As of Wednesday, the eastbound lanes of U.S. 30 were closed between County Line and Butt Roads while authorities worked the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
