Teens Detained After Parking Lot Shooting Near Sterling Heights Gym

Two teenagers are in custody following a weekend shooting in the parking lot of a fitness center in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

Authorities responded to reports of gunfire on March 15 near the intersection of 18 Mile and Dequindre roads. According to investigators, the incident began as a confrontation between two juveniles and escalated into gunfire. One individual was struck during the altercation and later treated and released from a local hospital.

Police confirmed that none of the individuals involved are residents of Sterling Heights, and officials believe the shooting was not a random act.

A 17-year-old suspect appeared in court for a preliminary hearing on March 17. However, the hearing was postponed after a request from prosecutors seeking additional time to review the case and determine whether the teen should face charges as an adult. The case remains under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Justice Center, with the next hearing scheduled for March 23.

Meanwhile, prosecutors are reviewing a warrant request for the second suspect, an 18-year-old who remains in custody with Sterling Heights police.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido described the situation as serious but expressed relief that the victim did not suffer life-threatening injuries. He also emphasized the weight of decisions involving potential adult charges for juveniles.

Lucido called on middle and high school administrators across the county to work with his office in educating students about the long-term consequences of violent behavior. He urged schools to invite assistant prosecuting attorneys to speak with students, stressing that choices made at a young age can significantly impact their futures.

The investigation remains ongoing.
