Gadsden, Alabama: A coordinated law enforcement operation in Gadsden led to the seizure of fentanyl, methamphetamine, a firearm and approximately $32,000 in cash during a recent drug bust that officials say targeted a key distributor connected to supply routes outside the city.
The operation, carried out on Friday, March 13, began with the execution of a search warrant at a residence on Herzburg Circle. The action was led by the Gadsden Police Department’s Street Crimes and Narcotics Unit, with assistance from the Glencoe Police Department and K-9 units trained in drug detection.
Authorities said the individual arrested was believed to be responsible for distributing a significant portion of the fentanyl circulating in the area. Investigators also indicated that the drugs were allegedly being transported into Gadsden from Georgia.
Mayor Craig Ford expressed strong concern about the presence of fentanyl in the community, emphasizing the deadly impact even small amounts can have.
“The fentanyl is what’s so dangerous. It only takes a very small amount to cause fatal overdoses,” Ford said, adding that efforts to combat drug trafficking will continue to expand.
Commander Simeon Smith described the arrest as a major step forward in addressing recent overdose cases in the city.
“For us, this was a big win,” Smith said. “We were able to remove an individual who was responsible for distributing a significant amount of fentanyl. That directly affects the overdoses we’ve seen lately.”
In addition to drugs and cash, officers recovered a firearm during the search. Law enforcement officials say the investigation remains active and additional arrests could follow.
Special Agent Matthew Brannon highlighted the broader strategy behind the operation, noting that authorities are not only targeting local distributors but also working to disrupt the supply chains bringing narcotics into the city.
“We’re not just reacting. We’re going after the sources and the routes that bring these drugs here,” Brannon said, referencing coordinated efforts that extend beyond Gadsden.
City officials say the ongoing crackdown is part of a larger initiative to improve public safety, protect residents and strengthen community stability. According to Mayor Ford, drug enforcement plays a critical role in maintaining safe neighborhoods and supporting local economic growth.
Police confirmed that more developments may come as investigators continue to track related suspects and distribution networks connected to the case.
