Livingston Parish, Louisiana: A 68-year-old woman lost her life Sunday evening after a fire broke out inside her apartment in Springfield, authorities confirmed.

Emergency crews with the Springfield Fire Department were dispatched to the 25000 block of Blood River Road shortly after 8:30 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence, with the fire primarily concentrated in the living room area.

Despite efforts to contain the blaze quickly, the woman was unable to escape. She was later pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been publicly released pending notification of family members.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring units. Officials have not reported any additional injuries at this time.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire. Authorities say the origin appears to be inside the living room, but the exact source remains unclear. Possible causes under consideration include improperly discarded smoking materials or malfunctioning batteries, though no official determination has been made.

Fire officials continue to examine the scene as part of an ongoing investigation. They are urging residents to ensure working smoke alarms are installed in their homes and to practice safe disposal of smoking materials and batteries to reduce fire risks.

Further details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
