20-Year-Old Worker Identified After Fatal Trench Collapse at Franklin County Construction Site

A young construction worker who lost his life in a trench collapse in Franklin County has been identified as 20-year-old Dalen Martin of Smithsburg, Maryland, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The incident occurred on Thursday, April 2, just after 2 p.m. along Clover Lane in Hamilton Township. Authorities said Martin was performing construction work when the trench suddenly gave way, trapping him.

Emergency crews responded quickly after receiving reports of a worker trapped up to his waist. The Franklin Fire Company initially worked to rescue the individual, but later confirmed that the situation had turned fatal.

The sudden nature of trench collapses makes them especially dangerous, often leaving little time for escape. In this case, despite rapid response efforts, Martin could not be saved.

Pennsylvania State Police confirmed his identity on Monday, bringing a name and story to the tragedy. He was just beginning his working life, making the loss even more heartbreaking for his family and community.

An inquiry has been made to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to determine whether an investigation will follow. As of Monday afternoon, no official update has been provided.

The incident remains under review, as authorities continue to examine what led to the collapse and whether any safety measures failed.
