Michigan 'Father Figure' Accused of Killing 3-Year-Old Girl With His Truck While She Raced Alongside It

A heartbreaking incident in Michigan has left a community in shock after a 3-year-old girl was killed by the man her family trusted to care for her.

Daniel Richard Bryant, 33, was taken into custody last week in connection with the death of little Estella Johnson. Authorities say Bryant — described by police as a “father figure” to the child and the fiancé of her mother — was behind the wheel of a pickup truck when the tragedy occurred on April 3 in a Cedar Springs mobile home park.

According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, Estella was running alongside Bryant’s truck in what he described as a “race” when she was struck. First responders rushed to the scene but were unable to save her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say alcohol may have been a factor — and Bryant himself admitted to deputies that he is an alcoholic. Authorities also noted fresh tire acceleration marks near the scene, raising serious questions about his account of the events.

Bryant is now facing charges of reckless driving causing death and second-degree child abuse. A judge has ordered him held on a $500,000 bond, with a court hearing scheduled for April 15.

Those who knew Estella remember her as a bright, curious, and loving little girl who lit up every room she entered.
