Las Vegas Dad Who Smoked THC Pen Before Killing 12-Year-Old Boy Walking to School Gets His Sentence

A Las Vegas father is heading to prison after fatally striking a 12-year-old boy in an active school zone — and what investigators say he was doing just before the crash has left the entire community outraged.

Oh’Ryan Brooks, 27, was sentenced Monday in Clark County court after accepting a plea deal. Prosecutors say Brooks had been smoking a THC vape pen before getting behind the wheel — and allegedly did so again while sitting in his car just minutes before the deadly crash.

Young Cristofer Suarez was simply walking to school that October morning when Brooks’ SUV slammed into him, sending the boy flying into a wrought iron fence. He never made it to class.

In court, Cristofer’s mother delivered a heartbreaking statement that left many in tears.

“No child should be killed, especially while going to school,” she said. “You are our last hope for justice.”

Brooks’ sentence shocked many — and the restitution amount ordered by the court has Cristofer’s mother saying it isn’t even enough to cover her son’s funeral.

The judge’s exact words during sentencing and the full breakdown of Brooks’ prison term — including when he could walk free — are detailed in the full report.
