A Minnesota woman will spend more than two decades behind bars after a fatal shooting that prosecutors described as the culmination of a violent and escalating domestic situation.
Jennifer Lynn Lieber, 47, was sentenced this week by a Scott County judge to 25 and a half years in prison for the 2024 killing of her boyfriend, 45-year-old David Nanovic. A jury had earlier found her guilty of second-degree murder.
According to investigators, the events of March 4, 2024, unfolded over several tense hours inside the home Lieber shared with Nanovic and his son. Deputies from the Scott County Sheriff’s Office arrived after receiving a welfare check request from Lieber’s estranged husband, who had been alerted by the children that she was behaving erratically.
At the scene, Lieber reportedly admitted to officers that she had “messed up,” initially claiming the gun discharged accidentally during a struggle. However, witness statements painted a different picture.
Nanovic’s son told authorities that Lieber had been agitated throughout the evening, holding a handgun and directing verbal abuse at his father. The situation escalated when she allegedly pointed the weapon at them and fired a shot as they approached the house.
Later, Nanovic returned alone to check on the property and was found fatally shot. An autopsy confirmed the gunshot wound was inflicted at close range.
Prosecutors also revealed prior threats made by Lieber toward Nanovic and his child, highlighting a pattern of instability and fear inside the household.
Lieber was taken into custody at the scene and has now been sentenced, with credit for time already served.
