She Was Caught Texting a Boy — Her Parents' Punishment Led to Her Death in a Makeshift Bathroom

A California couple has been sentenced to 22 years to life in prison after their 16-year-old daughter died following hours of abuse, in a case that prosecutors described as deeply disturbing and tragic.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Oriana Elias, 38, and Vincent Gibbs, 39, were convicted of second-degree murder, torture, and child abuse in the death of Pearlene Valavala in August 2021.

Prosecutors said the incident began when the parents discovered text messages their daughter had been sending to teenage boys. In response, they allegedly forced her to perform intense physical exercises outdoors in the heat. The punishment escalated into hours of physical assault using a wooden plank and a belt.

Authorities stated that the abuse was witnessed by the victim’s younger siblings. At some point during the ordeal, Pearlene collapsed inside a makeshift bathroom in the family’s trailer, which reportedly lacked basic utilities such as running water and electricity.

After her death, the couple called emergency services but allegedly instructed the other children to lie about what had happened.

Nathan J. Hochman said the case reflects “an unthinkable betrayal” by parents who were responsible for protecting their child.

The jury delivered guilty verdicts in March following a trial that began earlier this year. Prosecutors emphasized that no sentence can undo the loss of a young life or the trauma experienced by those who witnessed it.

The case has drawn attention to the severe consequences of abuse and the importance of protecting vulnerable children.
