A United States Postal Service (USPS) mail carrier is being called “incredibly lucky” after surviving a terrifying crash that left her trapped beneath her delivery truck in Medway on Friday morning.
According to local officials, the incident happened just before 11:20 a.m. on Main Street when a red pickup truck struck the postal vehicle from behind. At the time of impact, the carrier was leaning out of her truck to deliver mail—something common in residential routes. The force of the collision pushed the truck onto a nearby lawn, where it landed partially on top of her.
Witnesses quickly rushed to help and called 911. Among them was a nurse who stayed by the victim’s side, keeping her conscious and calm while waiting for emergency crews. Bystanders initially tried to lift the truck but were advised by police to stop, as it could have caused more harm.
Firefighters later used specialized airbags to carefully lift the vehicle and free the trapped worker. Officials described the rescue as “extremely delicate.”
Authorities believe a soft mulch surface beneath the truck likely saved her life by reducing the impact. She was airlifted to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester for treatment.
The pickup driver was also hospitalized. The crash remains under investigation, though police say speed does not appear to be a factor.
