Albany, NY – It may feel like a perfect spring day across the Capital Region right now, but the calm weather won’t last long. A quick-moving system is set to flip conditions dramatically within the next 24 hours, bringing steady rain, falling temperatures, and a much colder start to the new week.
As of Saturday, skies remain clear and bright across Albany, with temperatures climbing to a comfortable 71°F. Many residents are stepping out to enjoy the sunshine, but forecasters warn this is only a short break before a noticeable shift begins late tonight.
According to the National Weather Service, rain will begin developing late Saturday night and quickly become widespread by Sunday morning. The chance of precipitation jumps to nearly 90%, with up to half an inch of rainfall expected across the region.
Travel conditions could change quickly. Major routes including I-87, I-90, and Route 7 are likely to become slick as steady rain moves in. Drivers are advised to slow down, use headlights, and allow extra travel time, especially during heavier bursts Sunday afternoon.
The biggest change will be the temperature drop. Areas including Albany, Troy, and Schenectady will see readings fall sharply into the upper 40s during the day Sunday, creating a damp and chilly feel compared to Saturday’s warmth.
By Sunday night, colder air pushes in behind the system. Temperatures will dip to around 33°F, and while most areas should stay just above freezing, higher elevations could briefly see a rain-snow mix before the system clears out.
Monday will feel more like late winter than spring. Highs are expected to reach only around 46°F under partly sunny skies, with overnight lows dropping to near 27°F. That raises the risk of patchy frost and potentially slick spots early Tuesday morning, especially on untreated roads and surfaces.
Conditions improve slightly by Tuesday, with sunshine returning and temperatures climbing into the low 50s. A gradual warm-up continues into midweek, with highs nearing 60°F by Wednesday as more typical spring weather tries to return.
What to Expect in the Next Few Days:
Saturday: Sunny and warm, high near 71°F
Sunday: Steady showers develop, high near 47°F
Monday: Cooler with sunshine, high near 46°F, low near 27°F
Tuesday: Sunny, high near 53°F
Wednesday: Partly sunny, high near 60°F
Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware, especially if traveling Sunday or early next week, as rapid changes in both rainfall and temperature could impact road conditions and outdoor plans.
