LeFlore County, Oklahoma — A tragic officer-involved shooting in LeFlore County on Sunday has left one deputy dead and another officer injured, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI).
According to officials, the incident began around 11 a.m. when the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office, Wister Police Department, and the United States Forestry Department responded to a welfare check at a home near U.S. Highway 270. What initially appeared to be a routine call quickly escalated into a dangerous and deadly situation.
Authorities say that shortly after arriving at the scene, law enforcement officers came under gunfire. The suspect was later identified as 36-year-old Edgar Lara. Following the initial exchange, Lara barricaded himself inside the home, leading to a tense standoff with multiple responding agencies.
Additional support was requested, and teams including the Oklahoma Highway Patrol joined efforts to contain the situation. During the confrontation, a LeFlore County deputy and a Wister Police officer were both struck and injured.
Emergency responders transported the injured officer to a nearby hospital, where he was treated and is currently reported to be in stable condition. Tragically, the LeFlore County deputy succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
After several hours of negotiation and tactical response, the standoff came to an end around 4 p.m. when Edgar Lara surrendered to authorities. He was taken into custody after receiving treatment for minor injuries and later booked into the LeFlore County Jail.
On Monday, the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office identified the fallen deputy as Thomas “Walker” LeMay. In an emotional statement, officials described him as a dedicated public servant and a devoted family man.
“It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we announce the line-of-duty death of Deputy Thomas ‘Walker’ LeMay,” the sheriff’s office shared. “He was a true servant of the people, a loving son, brother, and father.”
In the aftermath of the incident, the community has come together to honor Deputy LeMay’s sacrifice. A patrol vehicle has been placed outside the LeFlore County Courthouse, where residents have been invited to leave flowers, messages, and other tributes.
A procession was also organized to escort Deputy LeMay, with multiple law enforcement agencies participating. Community members lined the streets in Poteau to pay their respects, reflecting the deep impact of the loss.
Support efforts have also been launched for the families affected. Fundraisers have been created to assist Deputy LeMay’s loved ones, as well as the injured Wister Police officer, identified as Chief Andy Thompson, as he continues his recovery.
Law enforcement agencies across Oklahoma have expressed condolences, highlighting the risks officers face daily. Statements shared by various departments emphasized unity, remembrance, and support for those impacted by the tragedy.
The OSBI continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Officials have stated that more details will be released as the investigation progresses.
