63-Year-Old Man Killed on Lawn Mower While Crossing Lincoln County Road — No Charges Filed

A tragic and unusual accident claimed the life of a 63-year-old North Carolina man on Wednesday afternoon — and authorities say no one will face charges in connection with his death.

Larry Dale Lail was riding a lawn mower across Killian Road near Hoover Road in Lincoln County when he was struck by an oncoming 1987 Chevrolet pickup truck. The deadly crash occurred just before 3:30 p.m. on April 22.

Despite emergency responders rushing to the scene, Lail was pronounced dead before he could be transported to a hospital. The 61-year-old driver of the pickup truck walked away from the crash uninjured.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol investigated the scene and determined that speed, impairment, and other negligent factors played no role in the fatal collision. As a result, no charges will be filed against the truck driver.

The crash has left the Lincoln County community in shock — a routine afternoon task turned into a devastating tragedy within seconds.
