A routine traffic stop near Interstate 81 turned into a major drug bust after a K-9 unit detected illegal substances inside a vehicle — leading to the arrest of two young Botetourt County residents.
What Happened
On Friday, April 17, special agents with the James River Regional Drug Task Force, along with deputies from the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office, conducted a traffic stop near I-81, Exit 156 in Botetourt County.
A K-9 unit performed an open-air sniff of the vehicle and immediately alerted officers to the presence of illegal drugs. A follow-up search of the vehicle led to the seizure of approximately 34 grams of methamphetamine.
Who Was Arrested
Two Natural Bridge Station residents were taken into custody:
- Shyanne E. Bryant, 23
- Charles L. Fitzgerald Jr., 23
Both were charged with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine (20 grams or more) — a serious felony offense. They are currently being held at Botetourt County Jail without bond.
Why This Matters
Local sheriffs released a strong joint statement warning drug traffickers that multi-agency cooperation is making it harder than ever to move illegal substances through the region.
“If you bring illegal drugs into or through our counties, you will be investigated and you will be arrested,” authorities warned.
What’s Next?
Both suspects face serious charges that could result in significant prison time. The case is being handled across multiple jurisdictions involving Rockbridge, Botetourt, and Bedford counties — along with Virginia State Police.
