Oakland, California — A tense situation unfolded Monday afternoon in East Oakland when a man reported to be pointing a gun at residents was fatally shot by police, according to authorities.
The incident began around 3:50 p.m., when officers responded to multiple calls from the 2000 block of Auseon Avenue about an armed individual in the neighborhood. Residents told dispatchers the man was walking through the area and aiming a firearm at people, raising immediate safety concerns.
When officers arrived near the 1900 block of Auseon Avenue, police said the man turned the weapon toward them. Moments later, he moved into a nearby yard on the 1800 block of 89th Avenue, where he again pointed the gun in the direction of responding officers.
At least one officer opened fire during the encounter. The man was struck and later transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 5 p.m.
Authorities confirmed that a firearm was recovered at the scene, though it remains unclear whether the man discharged the weapon during the incident. Police Chief James Beere stated that investigators are working to piece together the exact sequence of events and are interviewing both officers and local residents.
For those living in the area, the incident has stirred a mix of fear and familiarity. One longtime resident said the man was known in the neighborhood and described him as unpredictable and often aggressive.
“He was very violent for no apparent reason,” the resident said, adding that the man had previously fired shots into the air and, at times, toward people.
The shooting is now under active investigation, which is standard procedure in officer-involved incidents. Officials say more details will be released as the investigation progresses.
Local authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the event or has relevant information to come forward, as the community seeks clarity around what led to the deadly confrontation.
