Clinton Township, Michigan: A tragic early-morning police pursuit in Clinton Township has now led to serious murder charges, after a high-speed crash claimed the lives of two young men and left a community searching for answers.
According to officials in Macomb County, 54-year-old Keith Blackwell of Sterling Heights was formally charged Monday with two counts of second-degree murder. The charges stem from a police chase that ended in a deadly collision earlier this year.
What Happened During the Chase
The incident took place around 2:30 a.m. on March 14. Authorities say officers from the Clinton Township Police Department spotted Blackwell speeding along Gratiot Avenue and attempted a routine traffic stop.
Instead of pulling over, prosecutors say Blackwell accelerated, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph while fleeing police with emergency lights and sirens activated behind him.
Moments later, the situation turned deadly.
The Fatal Crash
As the pursuit continued, Blackwell’s 2002 Jeep Cherokee collided with a Volvo S60 traveling on 14 Mile Road.
Inside the Volvo were two young men:
- Richard Talley, 23, from Roseville
- Joshua Jones, 24, from Southfield
One victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The second was rushed to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries.
The sudden loss has left families grieving and renewed concerns about the dangers of high-speed police pursuits.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Initially, Blackwell faced charges including fleeing and eluding police and reckless driving. However, following further investigation and the fatal outcome, prosecutors upgraded the case to include two counts of second-degree murder.
At his arraignment, a judge increased his bond to $200,000. Blackwell is expected to return to court on June 22 for a probable cause conference.
Prosecutor Speaks Out
Peter Lucido strongly condemned the actions that led to the crash, emphasizing the broader public safety risk.
He stated that failing to stop for law enforcement can have devastating consequences and called for stricter penalties to deter such behavior, noting that too many lives have already been lost in similar incidents.
Additional Allegations
In a separate case, prosecutors allege Blackwell was involved in another incident just a day before the crash. He faces additional charges of third-degree home invasion and aggravated stalking tied to an alleged break-in at a woman’s home in Mt. Clemens.
