Panorama City, California — A deeply disturbing case out of Panorama City has left a community shaken after a 5-year-old boy was found dead inside a dumpster, leading to murder charges against his mother’s boyfriend.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, the child — identified as Elyjah Hearn — was discovered on July 12, 2025, in a commercial area along Van Nuys Boulevard. Officials say the boy’s body had been wrapped in a fleece blanket and discarded a day after the fatal assault.
Authorities allege that Malik Brycson Gaddis, 21, killed the child inside an apartment located less than a mile from where the body was later found. Prosecutors say the incident occurred on July 11, before Gaddis transported and disposed of the body.
Autopsy Reveals Severe Injuries
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office released autopsy findings this week, confirming that Elyjah died from blunt force trauma. The report detailed multiple serious injuries, including:
- Broken jaw and rib
- Liver damage
- Missing tooth
- Cuts and bruises across the body
- Head injuries and contusions
Investigators noted that some injuries appeared to be older and in the process of healing, raising concerns about prolonged abuse prior to the child’s death.
Family Remembers a Loving Child
Elyjah’s family described him as a bright and affectionate child. He was on the autism spectrum, but relatives said he was curious, intelligent, and deeply loving.
His grandfather shared that despite speech delays, Elyjah was highly aware and engaged with the world around him, often using devices like phones and tablets with ease.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Gaddis has been charged with murder and assault on a child causing death. If convicted, he faces a sentence of 25 years to life in prison. Court records also indicate a prior domestic violence arrest and an existing protective order against him.
He remains in custody with bail set at $2 million and is scheduled to appear in court on May 13.
In a statement, District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman called the case “heartbreaking and horrific,” emphasizing the office’s commitment to pursuing justice.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding Elyjah’s death, including any history of abuse and the events leading up to the fatal incident.
The case has renewed concerns about child safety and the importance of early intervention in situations involving potential domestic violence or abuse.
As the legal process moves forward, the focus remains on accountability — and on remembering a young life lost far too soon.
