A Texas mother is wanted by authorities after allegedly leaving her two young daughters — ages 11 and 6 — home alone for nearly six weeks while she traveled out of state.
What Happened?
Rayshawna Deanna Dowdell, 34, of Katy, Texas, is accused of abandoning her children between Feb. 17 and March 30 at a residence on Breakaway Lane — about 30 miles west of Houston.
The case came to light on March 30 when a neighbor called authorities after finding the girls alone at a nearby park.
How Were the Girls Living?
The 11-year-old was responsible for her younger sister, which included:
- Getting her ready for school every day
- Managing her daily needs
- Trying to find food for both of them
Investigators described the home as cluttered, unkempt and without food. The only food provided came through Uber Eats orders sent remotely by the mother.
Was the Mother in Contact?
Yes — but only through a phone.
Digital evidence showed the mother was texting the 11-year-old with instructions on school attendance, movement in and out of the home and obtaining food — but never returned in person.
What Happened After the Girls Were Found?
The girls were initially placed with their aunt. However, the mother allegedly got into a physical altercation with the aunt and fled with both children.
Law enforcement made at least five separate attempts to locate the children — all unsuccessful due to what authorities called false and inconsistent information from the mother.
Airport Escape
Investigators later discovered Dowdell had booked a flight to take the children out of state. Law enforcement coordinated with airport authorities — but she was tipped off and fled the airport before police could make contact.
Where Are the Children Now?
The two girls were eventually found safe during a welfare check at a residence in Ohio. They are now in protective custody.
Mother Still at Large
Dowdell faces one count of abandoning a child without intent to return. As of now, she has not been arrested and remains on the run.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office is actively searching for her.
