A routine traffic stop on U.S. 441 turned into a major drug bust after a K9 unit sniffed out a hidden stash — and led to the arrest of a 53-year-old local woman.
What happened
Rabun County Sheriff’s Office deputies pulled over a vehicle on U.S. Highway 441 in Rabun Gap. During the stop, deputies noticed signs of criminal activity and called in a K9 unit to do an exterior sniff of the car. The dog alerted — giving deputies probable cause to search.
Hidden beneath the vehicle’s spare tire, deputies found approximately one pound of suspected methamphetamine.
“This case shows the importance of proactive police work and cooperation between agencies.”
The arrest
Billie Jo Jamison, 53, of Rabun Gap, was taken into custody without incident and booked at the Rabun County Detention Center. She faces two charges:
Jamison is charged with trafficking methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute near a park or housing project — a charge that carries additional penalties under Georgia law due to its proximity to protected areas.
What we still don’t know
Authorities have not revealed where the drugs originated or where they were headed. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
Big picture
Sheriff Mark Gerrells said he is proud of his deputies’ work in keeping illegal drugs out of the community, crediting proactive policing and interagency cooperation for the bust.
