OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma — Summer is arriving early in central Oklahoma, and it is bringing heat, wind, and a storm threat that residents need to keep on their radar.
A stretch of warm, mostly sunny weather is expected across the Oklahoma City metro through the weekend — but forecasters are already watching a developing storm pattern heading into early next week.
Wednesday Starts Warm and Dry
Wednesday brings sunny skies and highs near 86 degrees across the Oklahoma City area.
Light southeast winds will pick up slightly during the afternoon, but conditions will stay dry throughout the day and into the night.
Overnight lows drop to around 64 degrees — comfortable, but a sign of the warmth building ahead.
Fire Weather Concerns Rise Thursday
Temperatures climb to near 89 degrees Thursday under mostly sunny skies.
The bigger concern that day is the wind. Gusty south winds could reach 33 mph during the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service, raising elevated fire weather concerns across parts of central and western Oklahoma.
Residents in those areas should avoid any outdoor burning and stay alert to local fire weather watches or warnings throughout the day.
Overnight lows Thursday will stay warm, dropping only to around 71 degrees.
Friday Is the Hottest Day of the Week
Friday brings the peak of this heat stretch with highs near 91 degrees and mostly sunny skies.
Warm overnight lows in the low 70s will persist through the weekend as summerlike conditions settle firmly across the southern Plains.
A slight chance of thunderstorms develops Friday night, so if you have outdoor plans for that evening, keep an eye on the radar before heading out.
Weekend Stays Hot Before Storm Chances Build
Saturday offers a brief break from storm chances with highs near 88 degrees and mostly sunny skies returning across the Oklahoma City metro.
That dry window does not last long.
Rain and thunderstorm chances increase again Sunday into Monday as Gulf moisture pushes northward into Oklahoma. Scattered showers and storms could become more widespread by early next week, while temperatures remain above seasonal averages.
