PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — A man is fighting for his life after being shot in the head in South Philadelphia on Thursday night, and investigators say what they found beneath his body could be a critical break in the case.
Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were already in the area of 12th and Bainbridge streets around 10:30 p.m. when they heard gunshots nearby.
They moved toward the sound and found a man lying unresponsive on the ground on the 1100 block of Kater Street.
What Officers Found at the Scene
The man had a gunshot wound to his head and was not responding, according to Philadelphia police Capt. Timothy Stephan, who spoke to NBC10 at the scene.
Officers rushed him to the hospital by police vehicle. He was admitted in extremely critical condition.
But it was what was found beneath the victim that immediately caught detectives’ attention.
Underneath the man, officers discovered a firearm, a shoe — and a pair of Ray Ban Meta AI smart glasses.
Could the Glasses Hold the Key?
Detectives are now actively investigating whether those glasses were recording at the moment the shooting took place.
Ray Ban Meta AI glasses are equipped with a built-in camera capable of capturing video and photos. If the device was recording, it could potentially have captured footage of the shooter, the surrounding area, or the moments leading up to the attack.
That detail has made the glasses a significant focus of the investigation.
A Second Weapon Found Nearby
Officers also located a second handgun that had been thrown into a backyard on a nearby street — suggesting someone fled the scene after the shooting.
A vehicle passing through the area was also struck by gunfire during the incident. Fortunately, no one inside the car was injured.
No Motive Established Yet
As of now, police have not released any information on what led to the shooting or whether any suspects have been identified.
Capt. Stephan did not confirm whether the victim has been identified or if anyone has been contacted as a person of interest.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
