A Florida daycare worker is behind bars after allegedly abusing a 3-month-old boy — and the trigger was a single text message.
LaKayla E. Hamilton, 26, was arrested by the Bay County Sheriff’s Office and charged with two counts of aggravated child abuse. The infant suffered skull fractures, broken ribs, a broken leg, and extensive bruising.
The incident happened at Quality Learning Child Care Center in Panama City. The boy’s parents said he was perfectly fine when they dropped him off that morning.
What happened inside the daycare?
According to investigators, Hamilton received a text message that morning that sent her into a rage. She later admitted to being in a “bad mood” over personal issues — and said she “spazzed out.”
Using a doll, she showed detectives how she slammed the baby into his crib and a changing table — each between 5 to 10 times — and also struck him in the head with toys. She said she couldn’t recall exact details because she was “so enraged.”
Investigators noted the boy likely would not have survived had his mother not rushed him to the hospital. He is now in stable condition.
What happened to Hamilton?
She was arrested and booked into Bay County Jail on a $2 million bond. Authorities also say she attempted to bring a marijuana vape into the jail. Her next court date is June 15.
