A West Virginia community is in shock after human remains found near a Big Chimney home were confirmed to belong to Shayln Harvey, a 16-year-old girl who had been reported missing just days earlier.
What Happened?
Shayln was last seen on May 2. Her family reported her missing on May 4. Police initially believed she may have gotten into a blue Dodge Ram pickup truck from the early 2000s.
As the investigation progressed, authorities obtained a search warrant for the Big Chimney residence — the same home where Shayln lived with her mother and stepfather, James Truman, 52.
On Friday, remains were discovered on the property. By Monday, the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office confirmed they belonged to Shayln.
Stepfather Arrested — But Not for Her Death
Truman was arrested on May 8 — before the remains were found.
He currently faces charges of incest and sexual abuse by a person in a position of trust, stemming from an alleged incident on or around April 15 — nearly three weeks before Shayln was reported missing.
He is being held at Kanawha County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond. His case has been sent to Kanawha County Circuit Court.
Authorities have not yet charged Truman in connection with Shayln’s death.
Investigation Ongoing
An autopsy has been completed, but police have not released a cause of death. The sheriff’s office is officially investigating Shayln’s death as a homicide.
No further court dates have been confirmed at this time.
Why This Case Matters
Shayln Harvey was just 16 years old. Her case is a reminder of how quickly a missing child report can turn into a tragedy — and why early action matters.
Authorities have not named any other suspects. The investigation remains active.
