A man is dead after a Memorial Day shooting steps away from a Kansas City school — and a person of interest is already in custody

KANSAS CITY, Missouri — A holiday evening turned deadly in the Blue Hills neighborhood when a man was shot and killed just steps away from a local elementary school on Memorial Day.

Kansas City police responded to reports of shots fired at around 6:30 p.m. on May 25 near 58th Street and Michigan Avenue. The call was upgraded to a shooting call while officers were still en route.

When police arrived, they found an adult male unresponsive in the street outside a residence. EMS transported him to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died shortly after arriving.

What Led to the Shooting

Police say the victim and at least two other people were involved in a verbal altercation in front of a residence on the block.

That argument escalated quickly.

Multiple gunshots were fired, and the victim was struck. The confrontation ended in seconds — but its consequences were permanent.

A person of interest was located near the scene and has since been detained by police.

The Scene Was Right Outside a School

The shooting took place directly in front of Our Lady’s Montessori School at 5809 Michigan Avenue.

Police have not confirmed whether any of the gunshots struck the school building. That part of the investigation is still ongoing.

Captain Jake Becchina said detectives are now working with prosecutors to present all available investigative findings. Prosecutors will then determine what charges, if any, apply.

Kansas City’s 49th Homicide This Year

This death marks the 49th homicide recorded in Kansas City so far in 2025, according to data tracked by The Kansas City Star.

It is a number that continues to weigh heavily on families and neighborhoods across the city.

Captain Becchina also noted that support is available for those affected. Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims and Witnesses of Violent Crime can provide assistance — including funding for temporary or even permanent relocation — subject to pre-approval by the state’s administering agency.

Anyone with information about this shooting is encouraged to contact the Kansas City Police Department.
