A man offered a 10-year-old ice cups — then tried to force him into a truck on Springbrook Trail

SMYRNA, Georgia — A 10-year-old boy is safe after a terrifying encounter on Springbrook Trail — but the man police say tried to take him is now behind bars.

On the evening of May 14, Jean Bellony, 69, allegedly approached a young boy at an apartment complex on Springbrook Trail and offered him ice cups.

While the child held the cups, Bellony grabbed him by the shoulder and shoved his back toward a parked truck, according to court documents.

The boy broke free and ran away crying.

How the Child Got Away

Court records show the child managed to pull out of Bellony’s grip before he could be forced into the vehicle.

A nearby resident heard the commotion — the boy’s family was already outside, yelling at Bellony and demanding to know why he was touching the child and trying to put him in the car.

“Everybody should look out for everybody’s children,” the neighbor said. “If you see someone trying to hurt or harm a child, you should step in and say something.”

What Police Are Saying

Cobb County Police Sgt. Eric Smith is urging parents to use this case as a reminder — summer break means more children are playing outside, often without supervision.

Smith says children should be told to immediately report any uncomfortable encounter to a trusted adult.

Authorities are also advising that kids play in groups and stay supervised, especially in shared outdoor spaces like trails and apartment complexes.

Where the Case Stands Now

Bellony was charged with kidnapping and cruelty to children.

He is currently being held without bond.

It is not yet known whether he made any statements to investigators following his arrest.

The case is a stark reminder that danger does not always look threatening at first. Sometimes it starts with something as simple as a free snack — and a child’s instinct to run may be the only thing that keeps them safe.
