CONROE, Texas: A routine cash service stop turned violent Monday morning when a Brinks security guard was shot during an armed robbery at a Bank of America ATM in a shopping center parking lot along Frasier Street in Conroe. Authorities say the suspect later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after being located and surrounded by law enforcement.
What Happened
According to the Conroe Police Department, officers were dispatched around 8:23 a.m. after reports of gunfire at the ATM located south of Cartwright Road. Witnesses told emergency dispatchers that a security guard had been shot and that a grey pickup truck was seen fleeing the scene moments later.
When officers arrived, they found the guard suffering from a gunshot wound. Police immediately began providing life-saving measures before Montgomery County Hospital District EMS transported the victim to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
The injured guard has been identified as Quang Truong, 59, of Spring, Texas. Officials confirmed he was in critical condition and undergoing surgery shortly after the incident.
Suspect Tracked Through Stolen Money Boxes
As officers secured the crime scene, police communications personnel began receiving real-time tracking data from money boxes that had been taken during the robbery. The tracking technology allowed authorities to follow the suspect’s movements across Conroe.
Law enforcement officers from the Conroe Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and the Texas Department of Public Safety coordinated efforts to locate the vehicle. The grey Dodge pickup was eventually identified traveling along Interstate 45.
Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop. However, before authorities could approach the vehicle, the driver shot himself in the head, police said.
The suspect, described as a 41-year-old white male, was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been publicly released pending notification of family members and the ongoing investigation.
