An accidental shooting involving two children occurred Saturday evening at the home of an Alabama state representative in the Trinity community of Lawrence County, according to local authorities.
Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on County Road 460 at approximately 5:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. Officials later confirmed that the incident took place at the home of State Representative Ernie Yarbrough.
Authorities stated that a 6-year-old child unintentionally discharged a firearm, striking his 13-year-old brother in the back of the shoulder. Emergency responders transported the teenager to a nearby hospital. Officials described the injuries as non-life-threatening, and the teen is expected to recover.
Law enforcement representatives emphasized that the incident appears to be accidental. No further details have been released regarding how the firearm was accessed.
The shooting has renewed conversations about safe firearm storage and child safety. Law enforcement officials stress that accidental discharges involving children are often preventable when proper precautions are taken.
Shane Kyker of the Madison Police Department highlighted the importance of firearm safety initiatives such as Project ChildSafe. The national program distributes free gun locks to law enforcement agencies, which then provide them to residents at no cost.
“Kids are naturally curious,” Kyker explained. “If a firearm is left unsecured, it creates a dangerous situation. We want to prevent accidental injuries by encouraging responsible storage.”
The gun locks are available around the clock to members of the community, with no questions asked. Officials encourage gun owners to store firearms unloaded and locked, keeping ammunition stored separately whenever possible.
Safety advocates note that secure storage practices — including gun safes, lockboxes, and cable locks — significantly reduce the risk of accidental shootings, particularly in homes with children.
The incident also brings attention to ongoing discussions about firearm policy in Alabama. In 2023, Representative Yarbrough sponsored legislation aimed at prohibiting the enforcement of red flag laws within the state and establishing legal remedies related to their enforcement. Red flag laws, where enacted, generally allow temporary removal of firearms from individuals deemed to pose a risk to themselves or others.
While the investigation into Saturday’s incident continues, authorities are using the moment to remind families about the critical role of safe gun storage in preventing tragedies. Law enforcement officials reiterated that even a brief lapse in securing a firearm can have serious consequences.
As communities reflect on the incident, officials hope that increased awareness and access to safety resources will help prevent similar accidents in the future.
