Winston-Salem Crash Leaves 31-Year-Old Driver Dead, Passenger Seriously Injured

A tragic late-night crash in Winston-Salem has left one man dead and a woman fighting serious injuries, according to local authorities.

Police say the accident happened around 12:25 a.m. Sunday along the 3500 block of High Point Road. Officers arriving at the scene found a badly damaged vehicle that had overturned after crashing into a tree. Both occupants had been thrown from the car during the impact.

The driver, identified as Humberto Zavala Rodriguez, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, Floriza Reyes-Cruz, 35, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Preliminary findings indicate the 2008 Hyundai was traveling south when the driver lost control. The vehicle veered off the road and struck a parked car. The force of the crash pushed the parked vehicle into a nearby home before the Hyundai flipped over and came to rest against a tree.

Investigators believe excessive speed may have played a major role in the crash. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether other factors were involved.

The Winston-Salem Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit is continuing to investigate the incident.

This heartbreaking accident serves as another reminder of how quickly lives can change on the road, especially when speed and control become critical factors.
