Scottsboro, Alabama: What began as a routine traffic stop on Sunday evening escalated into a drug-related arrest after officers reportedly discovered suspected narcotics inside a vehicle and on the driver.
According to local authorities, the stop occurred around 7:42 p.m. near the intersection of North Houston Street and Maple Avenue. Officers initiated the stop and made contact with the driver, later identified as Quinntis Lioneal Smith, 46, of Stevenson.
Odor of Marijuana Prompts Vehicle Search
During the initial interaction, officers reported detecting the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Based on that observation, Smith was asked to step out of the car while officers conducted a search.
While searching the vehicle, police located a clear plastic bag in the cup holder containing a white, rock-like substance. In addition, officers found multiple small plastic bags commonly associated with packaging narcotics, as well as a quantity of marijuana inside the vehicle.
Authorities stated that the white substance was field-tested at the scene and reportedly tested positive for crack cocaine.
Additional Drugs and Cash Seized
Following the vehicle search, officers conducted a search of Smith himself. During that search, law enforcement reported recovering additional quantities of crack cocaine and marijuana. Officers also seized $1,159 in cash, which authorities believe may be connected to narcotics activity.
Charges Filed
Smith was taken into custody and charged with the following offenses:
- Possession of a Controlled Substance (Crack/Cocaine)
- Possession of Marijuana (Second Degree)
- Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
After his arrest, Smith was transported to the Scottsboro City Jail. Due to the felony drug charge, he was later transferred to the Jackson County Jail, where he remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
Ongoing Enforcement Efforts
Local law enforcement officials emphasized that even routine traffic stops can lead to significant criminal investigations. Police continue to monitor traffic violations and suspicious activity throughout the city as part of broader efforts to address illegal drug activity within the community.
