A welfare check in a quiet Elizabeth neighborhood turned into a heartbreaking scene Wednesday evening, as Harrison County deputies discovered three family members dead in what investigators believe was a murder-suicide.
It started with a phone call from Mississippi. Ray Dixon was worried about his brother Paul — Paul had said something alarming earlier that day. So Ray did what any concerned family member would do: he called for a welfare check.
What deputies found when they arrived at a residence on Greenbrier Road SE in Elizabeth at around 7:26 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13, was far worse than anyone had feared.
The victims
- Brett Dixon, 36 — found deceased on the front porch
- Melissa Cochran Dixon, 54 — found inside the home
- Paul Dixon, 61 — found inside the home
What investigators found
According to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, Brett had been shot in the chest and head. Melissa sustained a single gunshot wound to her head. Paul died from what the sheriff’s office described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators believe the same person who died by suicide was responsible for the other two deaths. Sheriff Nick Smith confirmed there is no threat to the community and no suspect at large.
Neighbors remember a kind, familiar face
For the tight-knit community around Greenbrier Road, the news was a gut punch. Neighbors described Brett as a warm, friendly presence — someone who was always out mowing his lawn, always waving hello.
“Always had a smile on his face. Every time I seen him. I was like a second dad to him.”— Robert Hasty, neighbor
“It’s just a very tight knit community… I mean we’d see him out mowing his grass and everybody waves.”— Ramanda Archibald, neighbor
Investigation ongoing
The Harrison County Coroner’s Office and detectives are continuing their investigation. Authorities have said no additional details will be released at this time, out of respect for the family.
The sheriff’s office closed its statement with: “This incident is a tragic loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family, extended family, and friends of those involved.”
