MT. BALDY, California — A Sunday evening crash on one of Los Angeles County’s most scenic and treacherous mountain roads turned terrifying when a car ended up hanging off the edge of a cliff — and at least one person was rushed to a nearby hospital.
The crash happened at around 5:10 p.m. on Mt. Baldy Road, the winding stretch that climbs toward the Mt. Baldy Ski Resort, according to Los Angeles County firefighters.
Car Left Teetering Over Steep Drop
Aerial footage from the scene told a dramatic story.
The rear end of a silver sedan was left dangling over the side of a steep embankment — suspended at the edge of a cliff drop that left little room for error.
On the opposite side of the road sat a dark grey sedan, its front end crushed with heavy damage. Shattered glass and debris were scattered across the road in both directions.
The images made clear just how close this situation came to being far worse.
Multiple People Injured, One Hospitalized
Multiple people were injured in the two-car collision, firefighters confirmed.
However, only one person required transport to a nearby hospital by ambulance. The patient’s condition was not immediately released by authorities.
Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene to secure the vehicles and treat those involved.
Cause Still Under Investigation
What exactly caused the crash remains unknown at this time.
Investigators have not yet confirmed whether speed, road conditions, or another factor played a role. Mt. Baldy Road is known for its narrow lanes, sharp curves, and steep drop-offs — conditions that demand full attention from drivers at all times, especially in the late afternoon when sun glare can affect visibility.
The investigation is ongoing.
A Road That Demands Respect
Mt. Baldy Road is a popular route for drivers heading to the ski resort and hikers accessing the trails above. But its beauty comes with real risk.
Curves come quickly. Drop-offs sit just inches from the lane edge. And a single misjudgment can have serious consequences — as Sunday’s crash made painfully clear.
Local residents and frequent visitors to the area have long known that this road requires extra caution, particularly for those unfamiliar with its twists and turns.
Authorities have not yet released the names or ages of those involved in the crash.
