Central Kansas Fog Alert: Near-Zero Visibility Disrupts I-70 Travel Until Late Saturday Morning

Goodland, KS – A thick blanket of dense fog is creating dangerous travel conditions across parts of northwest Kansas and south-central Nebraska early Saturday, with visibility dropping below 500 feet in several areas.

The National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory impacting more than a dozen counties, including key travel routes near Goodland, Colby, and Hays. The advisory remains in effect through 11 a.m., with the most severe conditions reported along Interstate 70 between Kanorado and Quinter.

Drivers are facing rapidly changing visibility, in some cases dropping to a quarter mile or less within seconds. Transportation officials warn that highways such as I-70, US-83, and US-40 are particularly hazardous, especially near exits, intersections, and rural stretches where lighting is limited.

Communities stretching north into Nebraska—including Furnas, Harlan, and Webster counties—are also experiencing reduced visibility, making early morning travel risky. Local authorities are urging residents to delay non-essential trips until conditions improve.

For those who must travel, safety remains critical. Experts recommend using low-beam headlights, reducing speed, and maintaining extra distance between vehicles. High beams should be avoided, as they reflect off fog and worsen visibility. If conditions become too dangerous, drivers should pull off the road completely and turn off lights to avoid confusion for other motorists.

Forecasters expect gradual improvement by late morning as sunlight begins to clear the fog, though drivers should remain cautious until visibility fully returns.
