Strongsville, Ohio — A routine Saturday evening turned tragic outside a Costco store in Strongsville, Ohio, where a longtime employee lost his life after confronting a man allegedly trying to enter the store with a firearm. Authorities say the incident unfolded quickly and left shoppers and witnesses shaken.
According to the Strongsville Police Department, officers were called to the Costco location on Royalton Road around 5:43 p.m. following reports of gunfire. The store sits roughly 15 miles southwest of Cleveland.
When officers arrived, they found 61-year-old Randolph E. Corrigan suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Bystanders were already attempting to help, applying pressure to his injuries before emergency responders took over. He was rushed to MetroHealth, where he later died.
Police say the suspect, Christian M. Bryant, a 22-year-old truck driver, remained at the scene and was taken into custody without resistance.
What Led to the Shooting
Investigators believe the incident began when Corrigan stopped Bryant from entering the store while carrying a visible firearm. Witnesses told police they noticed what appeared to be a drum magazine sticking out of Bryant’s pocket as he approached the entrance.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the confrontation escalated when Bryant allegedly pulled out a semiautomatic handgun. Police say Corrigan then took out a pocket knife during the encounter.
Authorities allege Bryant fired an initial shot that caused Corrigan to fall. After a brief pause, he reportedly fired multiple additional rounds in rapid succession. Investigators later recovered 13 spent .40-caliber shell casings at the scene and seized a handgun equipped with a high-capacity drum magazine.
Suspect Claims Self-Defense
While being detained, Bryant repeatedly told officers that he acted in self-defense, claiming he was approached with a knife “for no reason.” He attempted to make the same claim during his court appearance before being interrupted by his attorney.
Police have not confirmed that claim and say the investigation is ongoing. Officials are continuing to gather witness statements and review evidence to determine the full sequence of events.
Court Proceedings and Charges
Bryant has been formally charged with one count of murder. He appeared in Berea Municipal Court, where a judge set his bond at $5 million. The case is expected to be presented to a grand jury, and additional charges could follow depending on the findings.
Authorities also noted that Bryant has a prior criminal record, though he was not on probation or parole at the time of the incident.
Community Impact
The fatal shooting has left the local community stunned. Corrigan, described by those present as doing his job to ensure safety, was reportedly conscious when first responders arrived but quickly began to decline before his death.
Officials are urging anyone who witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken with investigators to come forward, as they continue piecing together what led to the deadly encounter.
The case remains under active investigation.
