DORSET TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A deputy-involved shooting is under investigation in Ashtabula County after a man refused to drop a rifle during a domestic disturbance call Saturday.
Deputies were called to Footville-Richmond Road after a woman reported a 42-year-old man had returned home intoxicated and armed. She and two children, ages 6 and 12, were locked inside the home when officers arrived.
Officials found the suspect outside with his vehicle backed into a ditch across the road. Investigators believe he had several firearms on him at the time.
Two deputies confronted the man in the backyard while he was carrying a rifle. After he refused repeated commands to drop the weapon, one deputy fired a single round.
The man was struck and fell to the ground, still holding the firearm. Deputies provided first aid on the scene before he was transported to UPMC Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pennsylvania.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is now reviewing the incident.
