Bassett, Virginia — A drug investigation in Bassett has resulted in the arrest of a 54-year-old man and the removal of children from a residence, according to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.
The case unfolded on April 24 when deputies executed a search warrant at a home on Riverside Drive following an ongoing investigation into suspected drug distribution. Authorities say the operation was part of efforts to curb illegal narcotics activity in the area.
During the search, Gregory Ray Meade, a resident of the property, arrived at the location. Deputies attempted to guide him into the driveway, but he drove away briefly before stopping in a nearby parking lot. Officials say Meade then drove toward a wooded area before returning to the residence.
Investigators searched the area where he had stopped and reportedly discovered a bag containing suspected methamphetamine along with another bag believed to contain Schedule II narcotics. A search of his vehicle later revealed multiple digital scales and a cellphone—items authorities say are commonly associated with drug distribution.
According to deputies, Meade admitted involvement in drug-related activities and told investigators he had discarded the substances after noticing law enforcement presence.
The situation escalated further when officials confirmed that children were living at the residence. Due to concerns about their safety in connection with alleged drug activity, the Martinsville-Henry County Department of Social Services was called to the scene. The children were taken into custody and are now being cared for by a family member.
Meade has been charged with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute Schedule II narcotics. He is currently being held at the Henry County Adult Detention Center without bond.
Authorities say the investigation remains active, and additional updates may follow as more information becomes available.
