Monterey County, California — A tragic high-speed crash in rural Monterey County has left a 16-year-old boy dead and his father behind bars, as authorities allege reckless and intoxicated driving led to the devastating incident.
According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred on the night of April 3 along Meridian Road near Revilla Drive, in an unincorporated area northeast of the city of Monterey. Officials say the vehicle was traveling at an extremely high speed before losing control.
Investigators from the California Highway Patrol reported that 37-year-old Edgar Banuelos was driving a Volkswagen sedan at approximately 100 mph in a zone with a 25 mph limit. As the car sped over a small hill, it reportedly became airborne before crashing into a tree and bursting into flames.
Inside the vehicle were Banuelos and his three children. The violent impact and fire claimed the life of his 16-year-old son, Edgar Jeremiah Banuelos-Gonzalez. His two younger sons, ages 14 and 7, survived but suffered moderate injuries and were transported to a hospital in San Jose for treatment. Banuelos himself sustained major injuries.
Authorities allege alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. Prosecutors from the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office have charged Banuelos with second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and multiple counts of child abuse for endangering his children.
During a recent court appearance, Chief Assistant District Attorney Berkley Brannon described the case as an extreme example of disregard for human life, citing both the excessive speed and alleged intoxication. Banuelos has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is currently being held in the Monterey County Jail on $1.4 million bail. His next court date is scheduled for May 6.
The emotional aftermath has deeply affected the victim’s family. The boy’s mother, Jessica Gonzalez, has publicly called for compassion and forgiveness despite the circumstances. She described her son as a joyful and caring teenager who brought happiness to those around him.
At the same time, she expressed heartbreak over the severity of the charges against the children’s father, highlighting the complex emotions surrounding the tragedy.
Officials continue to emphasize the dangers of impaired and high-speed driving, particularly on rural roads where conditions can quickly become deadly. The case remains under investigation as legal proceedings move forward.
