East Los Angeles Police Pursuit Ends in Crash and Fatal Shooting, Passenger Injured

A police pursuit through downtown Los Angeles and East Los Angeles on Wednesday morning ended in a deadly confrontation after a stolen vehicle crashed into a patrol SUV, according to Los Angeles Police Department officials.

Authorities said the incident began around 9:48 a.m. near 7th Street and Towne Avenue when officers attempted to stop a driver wanted in connection with grand theft auto. Instead of pulling over, the suspect fled, leading officers on a high-speed chase through city streets and onto the freeway.

The pursuit came to a sudden stop near the Olympic Boulevard off-ramp on the 5 Freeway when the suspect made a U-turn and collided with an LAPD vehicle. What followed quickly escalated into a violent encounter.

Speaking at a news briefing, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said the driver exited the vehicle after the crash and opened fire on officers. Police returned fire, striking the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

A second individual in the passenger seat was trapped inside the damaged vehicle and initially unable to exit. Video footage showed the passenger signaling to officers before eventually crawling out through a window. He was transported to a hospital with injuries sustained during the crash.

Officials confirmed that a use-of-force investigation is now underway, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

The incident caused significant disruption in the area during the morning commute, with multiple lanes closed as investigators processed the scene.
