South Bend, Indiana – A 62-year-old man from Elkhart has been sentenced to more than four years in federal prison, bringing closure to a bank robbery case that remained unsolved for years.
On April 21, 2026, Jerry Boomershine was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Damon R. Leichty after pleading guilty to bank robbery, according to U.S. Attorney Adam L. Mildred.
How the Crime Happened
The robbery dates back to May 2018, when Boomershine entered a bank in Goshen wearing a mask and carrying a firearm. Authorities said he pointed the weapon at employees and stole approximately $8,450 before fleeing the scene.
At the time, investigators were unable to identify the suspect. However, they recovered a sweatshirt believed to have been worn during the robbery — a key piece of evidence that would later change the course of the case.
Breakthrough Years Later
For years, the case remained unresolved until April 2025, when advances in forensic technology led to a major development. A DNA sample collected from Boomershine was matched with DNA found on the recovered sweatshirt.
That match allowed investigators to finally identify and arrest him, nearly seven years after the robbery.
Officials credited agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Goshen Police Department, and the Indiana State Police for their persistence in solving the case.
Sentence and Penalties
Boomershine was sentenced to 51 months in prison. The court ordered that 48 months be served consecutively, while 3 months will run concurrently with an existing state sentence.
In addition to prison time, he will serve one year of supervised release after completing his sentence. He was also ordered to pay $8,450 in restitution — the amount taken during the robbery.

U.S. Attorney Adam Mildred said the case shows how law enforcement efforts can pay off even years later, especially with evolving technology like DNA analysis.
FBI Indianapolis Special Agent in Charge Timothy J. O’Malley emphasized that violent crimes such as bank robbery create lasting fear for victims and will continue to be pursued aggressively, regardless of how much time has passed.
