Franklin County, Missouri — A tragic road accident in Franklin County, Missouri, has left a community in shock after three members of the same family lost their lives in a head-on collision late Monday evening.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 8:45 p.m. on Missouri Route 100, just east of Dundee Road. Officials reported that a 2011 Nissan Sentra traveling eastbound crossed the center line for reasons that are still under investigation and collided head-on with a 2020 Ford Explorer coming from the opposite direction.
The impact of the crash was severe. After being struck, the Ford Explorer veered off the right side of the roadway and came to a stop in a nearby ditch.
Victims Identified
Authorities confirmed that all three occupants of the Nissan were from Hermann, Missouri. The victims have been identified as 47-year-old Mike Elbert, 42-year-old Rachel Elbert, and their 10-year-old daughter.
Both adults were pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of their injuries. Their daughter was rushed to St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries despite medical efforts.
The driver of the Ford Explorer, a 70-year-old woman from New Haven, Missouri, survived the crash but sustained moderate injuries. She was transported to Mercy Hospital Washington for treatment and is expected to recover.
Community in Mourning
The loss has deeply affected the Hermann community, where the family was well known. The young girl attended Hermann Elementary School, and Mike Elbert was actively involved as a volunteer assistant football coach at Hermann High School.
In response to the tragedy, the Gasconade R-1 School District arranged for additional counselors to support students and staff coping with the loss. Superintendent Dr. Geoff Neill expressed the emotional impact on the community, calling it “a sad day for the family and the entire school district.”
