Columbia, Maryland — A shocking act of violence unfolded in Columbia, Maryland, where a gas station clerk was shot at point-blank range during an attempted robbery. Authorities say the incident has left the victim in serious condition and the accused now facing multiple charges.
The shooting occurred on the evening of April 17 at a Shell gas station located along Cradlerock Way. According to the Howard County Police Department, a woman entered the store, approached the counter calmly, and then suddenly escalated the situation.
Investigators identified the suspect as Shantay Lashay O’Donnell, a 46-year-old woman from Virginia. Surveillance footage shows her pulling out a silver revolver from her purse and pointing it directly at the clerk, appearing to demand money. Within moments, she fired at the employee before fleeing the scene without taking any cash.
Police later confirmed that although the video clearly captures one gunshot, the suspect is believed to have fired multiple rounds during the incident.
Victim in Serious Condition
The injured clerk, an adult male employee, was immediately rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. As of April 20, he remained in serious condition, highlighting the severity of the attack.
Investigation and Arrest
Following the shooting, detectives launched an intensive investigation. On April 20, authorities publicly released surveillance footage and announced a reward to gather leads. The effort quickly progressed, and O’Donnell was identified as the suspect.
Police confirmed she is currently in custody in another state on unrelated charges. Officials say she will soon be transferred or formally served with multiple charges related to the Maryland shooting.
Separate Case Raises Concerns
In an unrelated but similarly disturbing case, authorities in Fort Myers reported a fatal attack earlier this month. A gas station clerk, Nilufa “Yasmin” Easmin, was killed after being assaulted with a hammer. The suspect in that case, Rolbert Joachin, allegedly carried out the attack after luring the victim outside.
The incident drew national attention, with Donald Trump commenting publicly and linking the case to broader immigration policy debates.
Ongoing Developments
Back in Maryland, officials say the investigation into the Columbia shooting remains active. Formal charges against O’Donnell are expected soon, and more details will be released as the legal process moves forward.
Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of community cooperation and vigilance as they work to ensure justice in the case.
