Cambridge, Massachusetts: A terrifying afternoon unfolded in Cambridge on Monday after a gunman armed with what authorities described as an assault-style rifle opened fire on busy Memorial Drive, leaving two people critically injured before being stopped by a Massachusetts State Police trooper and an armed civilian.
The shooting happened around 1:30 p.m. near the stretch between River Street and the Pleasant Street extension, an area usually crowded with drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and families along the Charles River.
Officials identified the suspect as 46-year-old Tyler Brown of Boston. Authorities say he is now in custody and receiving treatment at a Boston hospital after being shot multiple times during the confrontation.
According to investigators, the incident began shortly after police received concerns about Brown earlier in the day. Authorities said Boston police had attempted a wellness check at his Dorchester residence after his parole officer reported alarming suicidal statements.
A short time later, Cambridge police received information that Brown was believed to be carrying a rifle near Memorial Drive.
By the time officers arrived, officials said the situation had already escalated into what prosecutors described as an “active shooter situation.”
Witness videos captured chaotic scenes as the suspect allegedly walked directly down the middle of the roadway while firing repeatedly at passing vehicles. Authorities believe between 50 and 60 rounds were fired during the attack, striking more than a dozen vehicles.
Two men traveling in separate cars suffered life-threatening gunshot injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals. Officials said both victims remain in critical condition.
Investigators stated there is currently no indication the victims were specifically targeted or connected to the suspect.
As panic spread across the roadway, drivers abandoned vehicles and nearby pedestrians scrambled for safety.
Authorities credited the quick actions of a responding State Police trooper and an armed civilian — identified as a Marine veteran licensed to carry a firearm — with ending the shooting within minutes.
Officials said both the trooper and the civilian fired at the suspect, striking him multiple times in the arms and legs. Troopers then immediately provided emergency medical aid to Brown and the injured victims until ambulances arrived.
During the exchange of gunfire, investigators said a State Police cruiser was also struck by bullets.
The violence narrowly missed causing even greater tragedy. A U.S. Postal Service truck was hit by gunfire, with one bullet piercing the windshield and passing only inches away from the driver’s headrest.
Witnesses described scenes of confusion and fear as shots rang out rapidly across the busy roadway.
One driver said he ducked inside his car after seeing the gunman raise the weapon toward him. Another witness, who was driving a school van intended to transport children with special needs, said she ran for safety through nearby bushes while hearing continuous gunfire behind her.
Residents living in nearby apartment buildings also reported hearing dozens of shots fired in rapid succession.
Authorities said the suspect is expected to face multiple charges, including two counts of armed assault with intent to murder. Investigators also confirmed that Brown has a previous criminal history involving violent offenses and past confrontations with law enforcement.
Law enforcement agencies are continuing to review surveillance footage and interview hundreds of witnesses as the investigation remains active.
Officials are asking anyone who recorded video of the shooting to contact Massachusetts State Police as investigators work to piece together the full sequence of events.
