Maryland — A decades-old missing person case in Baltimore County has taken a major turn after police charged a man with the murder of his wife, who vanished while preparing for their young son’s birthday celebration.
Authorities confirmed that Dwight Rust Jr., 48, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Michelle Rust, who disappeared back in July 2002 under suspicious circumstances.
What Happened
According to the Baltimore County Police Department, Michelle Rust was last seen on July 20, 2002, at the couple’s home on Clark Boulevard in Arbutus. She was reportedly preparing for her 3-year-old son’s birthday party when she suddenly went missing.
Her husband initially told police that she had left around 9:30 a.m. to go to the store for party supplies and never returned. He claimed she drove off in a green 1998 Dodge Caravan.
Investigation Raised Red Flags
As investigators began looking into the case, several inconsistencies emerged:
- No witnesses reported seeing Michelle leave the house that morning
- No one saw her driving the vehicle she was said to have taken
- Her car was later found abandoned a few miles away, with a key broken off in the door
