Brookings, SD – A sudden return of winter weather is making roads dangerous across eastern South Dakota and southwest Minnesota, as a mix of snow and ice continues to impact the region through early Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday. Light snowfall combined with freezing rain is expected to create slick and potentially hazardous conditions, especially during overnight hours and the early morning commute.
Areas including Brookings, Madison, Pipestone, Marshall, and Windom could see up to an inch of snow, along with ice accumulation of around one-tenth of an inch. While these amounts may seem minor, officials warn that even a thin layer of ice can make roads extremely slippery.
The advisory impacts parts of Minnesota—including Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Cottonwood, and Pipestone counties—as well as Brookings, Lake, and Moody counties in South Dakota. Smaller communities such as Tyler, Slayton, Fulda, and Flandreau are also expected to be affected.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and remain alert for sudden changes in road conditions. Bridges and untreated surfaces are likely to freeze first, increasing the risk of accidents.
Authorities recommend checking local road conditions before traveling. In both states, updates are available by dialing 511.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve Saturday morning as temperatures rise, but caution is advised until roads fully clear.
