Superior, WI Ice Storm Warning: Dangerous Overnight Ice Could Shut Down Travel by Saturday Morning

Superior, Wisconsin – A dangerous ice storm is set to sweep across northwest Wisconsin Friday night, with officials warning that roads could quickly become impassable before the Saturday morning commute.

The National Weather Service office in Duluth has issued an Ice Storm Warning from 7 p.m. Friday through 10 a.m. Saturday, covering counties including Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, Iron, Burnett, Washburn, Sawyer, and Price.

Forecasters say up to half an inch of ice could accumulate, along with around 2 inches of snow and sleet. Areas such as Superior, Ashland, Hayward, Spooner, and Phillips are expected to experience the most severe icing overnight.

Conditions are likely to deteriorate rapidly after sunset. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads — especially major routes like U.S. Highway 2 and Highway 53 — may freeze first, creating extremely slick and hazardous driving conditions. Authorities warn that even short trips could become risky within minutes.

Beyond travel concerns, the weight of accumulating ice could cause tree limbs to snap, increasing the risk of power outages across the region. Thousands of residents could be affected if conditions worsen overnight.

Officials strongly advise avoiding travel during the warning period. If you must drive, carry emergency supplies such as food, water, warm clothing, and a flashlight.

The worst conditions are expected before sunrise Saturday, with gradual improvement likely after 10 a.m., though lingering hazards may remain.
