Loved Ones of 7-Year-Old Girl Say Warning Signs Were Missed Before Her Death

The loved ones of a 7-year-old girl who prosecutors say suffered months of abuse before her death are now speaking publicly about the pain, regret and unanswered questions they continue to carry.

Family members and close friends of Jor’Dynn Duncan said they are struggling with memories of the little girl’s final months and the heartbreaking realization that they were unable to reach her in time.

Her godmother, Alisha Case, said she still thinks about Jor’Dynn’s smile, laughter and a voicemail the child left shortly before she died.

During the Christmas holiday, Jor’Dynn called to thank Case for gifts that had been dropped off at the home where the girl was staying with her father’s girlfriend, Emily Kelly. But according to Case, she was repeatedly prevented from spending private time with the child.

“We wish we knew,” Case said while reflecting on the situation. “We had a feeling something wasn’t right, but so much was hidden.”

Jor’Dynn died on Dec. 29.

According to the family, they later received a message claiming the child had suddenly developed a high fever before emergency crews were called. Authorities, however, now allege the 7-year-old had endured severe abuse over an extended period of time.

Prosecutors say investigators uncovered evidence suggesting Jor’Dynn was tied up and tortured for nearly a year. Court documents allege the abuse was documented through videos and messages. Officials said the child suffered dozens of injuries, including internal wounds, while the reported cause of death was linked to an untreated infection.

Relatives said Jor’Dynn became increasingly isolated during the final year of her life.

“She was all by herself, and she had no voice,” said Jeanette Case, the child’s godmother’s mother.

Family members said they were rarely allowed to see or speak with her alone despite repeated efforts to arrange visits in public places or at home.

Looking back, they now believe the restrictions were warning signs.

Prosecutors also allege Jor’Dynn missed around 40 days of school over the course of the year. Excuses reportedly included illness and family travel.

Loved ones say they are now questioning whether stronger intervention could have helped protect the child.

“There’s no excuse,” Jeanette Case said. “Someone should have checked on her.”

Emily Kelly has been charged with second-degree murder. Kelly’s mother, Barbara Renner, faces a manslaughter charge, while Elyssa Seymore has been charged with unlawful imprisonment. All three defendants have pleaded not guilty.

Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Jor’Dynn’s placement and the events leading up to her death.

Those who knew the little girl say they now want her story remembered not only for the tragedy, but for the joyful child they say she once was.

“We love her so much,” Alisha Case said.
