A man was killed Thursday morning after being struck by a dump truck on westbound Interstate 40, east of Albuquerque, according to authorities.
The fatal crash happened about 10 miles east of Albuquerque, near mile marker 176. Deputies with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene around 9 a.m. after receiving reports of a pedestrian being hit on the interstate.
When deputies arrived, they found a man who had been struck by a dump truck while on the roadway. Life-saving measures were attempted, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity, pending notification of next of kin.
Traffic Disruptions Following the Crash
Following the incident, westbound lanes of Interstate 40 were closed for several hours as investigators worked to document the scene and clear the roadway. Traffic was diverted at Exit 178, causing delays for commuters and commercial vehicles traveling through the area.
The lanes were later reopened once the investigation was completed and the scene was deemed safe for travel.
Weather Conditions May Have Played a Role
Officials noted that the area received snowfall overnight, which may have contributed to hazardous driving conditions. Snow and cold temperatures can reduce visibility and make road surfaces slick, increasing the risk of serious accidents, especially on high-speed interstates.
Authorities also confirmed that Sandia Crest Road was closed Thursday morning due to weather conditions, and additional snow was expected throughout the day.
Ongoing Investigation
Investigators are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the crash, including why the man was on the interstate and whether weather or road conditions played a role. No charges or citations have been announced at this time.
Drivers are urged to use caution when traveling during winter weather, reduce speed, and remain alert—especially in areas where road conditions may change quickly.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information relevant to the investigation is encouraged to contact the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.
