FARMINGTON, N.M. — New Mexico State Police are asking for the public’s help as they investigate a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a woman early Thursday morning in Farmington.
According to state police, officers responded to the scene around 1:47 a.m. on January 2 near the intersection of NM Highway 371 and County Road 8501. When troopers arrived, they found a female victim lying near the northbound shoulder of the roadway. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe the crash occurred sometime between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. Based on evidence collected at the scene, including debris patterns, authorities say the suspect vehicle is likely a 2021 or 2022 GMC Canyon midsize pickup truck.
Police say the vehicle is believed to have damage to the driver’s side headlight and fog light, along with possible damage to the front grille and bumper. The driver involved did not stop to render aid or report the crash, according to investigators.
State police have not yet released the identity of the victim, pending notification of next of kin. The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation, including the direction of travel and whether speed or impairment may have been factors.
New Mexico State Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash, seen a damaged GMC Canyon matching the description, or has any information related to the incident to contact them. Tips can be provided by calling NMSP at (505) 841-9256.
Authorities say even small details could be critical in identifying the driver responsible and bringing closure to the victim’s family.
